Pipe Cleaner and Glue:
One problem I find over and over is the fact that pipe cleaner was not used during the install or repair when pvc, cpvc or abs pipes were connected to couplings, elbows or tees. Be sure to clean the connections with the proper cleaner and use the proper glue for the type of pipe you are using. Glues are not used on copper, pex or PB.
Cold Water Pipe Grounding:
This is a tough call between a plumbing or electrical tip...but here goes. If your house was built in the early 60's or before and you noticed that there is a lot of green corrosion in the soldered joints on your copper pipes, check to make sure or have an electrician check that the ground from your electric service is not connected to your plumbing pipes. This is not only bad for electrical safety, but could be causing harm to your pipes. Here in Kershaw county and many other places two 8' driven ground rods are now required to meet code.So next time you happen to be crawling around under your house, take a look.
Whole House Water Leak Detection:
One fast way to determine if you have any leaks in your home is to make sure that all the water in the home is off, faucet etc. Then look at your water meter if you are connected to a water utility. There is usually a small hand on the meter. Watch this hand for any movement. If it moves there may be a leak. To find this small hand if it is not obvious have someone flush a toilet while you watch the meter. When the toilet fills up the hand should stop. If you are on a well watch the pressure gauge to see if the needle is dropping. If you don't a have gauge listen for the contact switch. If it clicks on and off occasionally with no water running in the house start checking for leaks.
Water Pipe Insulation Tips:
A good energy tip is to wrap your hot water pipes to cut down on radiational cooling. Ideally this should be done from the water heater throughout the home to all points.
Tankless or Instant Water Heaters:
If and when the water heater finally dies, consider "point of use" or "tankless" water heaters. The price on these have come down a lot. This will mean however that power must be pulled into each location. Do your homework and I think you will find the overall savings and added home value will pay off. Instant hot water is nice to have!
Wash Machine Tip: Leave the lid open on the wash machine when not in use to help deter the onset of rust in your wash tub and lid area. Be sure to check the hoses at least every few months for swelling or cracks this could help avoid a flooded home. If possible turn the water off at the valves when not in use.
